19/01/12. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The festival of Timket is celebrated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Numerous parades start at many churches, carrying their replica Arks of the Covenant, accompanied by drumming, singing, harps and ullulation, through the city to Jan Meda. Jan Meda is the place where the baptism of Jesus is commemorated by Orthodox Christian Ethiopians. Red carpet is picked up from one end of the parade, rolled up and run with by a team of young men, to lay it again at the other end of the parade route, nearly knocking over members of the crowd in the process. The red carpet is about to be laid in front of one of the larger arks. Photo credit: Jane Hobson
